Geneva Douglas

Funeral services for Geneva Douglas will be held Saturday, August 31, 2013 at 10:00 AM at the First Baptist Church in Okemah. Interment will follow at the Douglas Family Cemetery north of Okemah. Geneva Douglas was born February 14, 1941 in Konawa, Oklahoma to James McCosar and Wisey (Emarthle) McCosar. She passed away Wednesday, August 28, 2013 in Tulsa, Oklahoma at the age of 72. Mrs. Douglas was a longtime resident of the Okemah area. She was a 1959 graduate of the Haskell Institute in Lawrence, Kansas. She and Harry Douglas were married August 18, 1961 in Dallas, Texas. Mrs. Douglas retired after 24 years of employment as a Johnson O’Malley (JOM) coordinator for Mason and Okemah schools. She was a dedicated advocate for Indian education. She enjoyed gospel singing, had a great sense of humor, traveling, going to garage sales and most of all her children, students and family. She was also a member of the Cold Springs Baptist Church in Konawa. She is preceded in death by her parents and two brothers, Eastman Harjo and Dave Walters. Survivors include her husband, Harry Douglas of the home, two sons, Bruce Douglas and wife Lori of McAlester and Ernest McPerryman and wife Melody of Morris, Oklahoma; one daughter, Alisa Douglas and husband James of Muskogee, Oklahoma; two brothers, Frank Harjo of Konawa and Keno King of Big Cypress, Florida; two sisters, Emma Jean Harjo of Konawa and Lucy Tiger of Tempe, Arizona; four grandchildren, Ty Guthrie, Brett Douglas, Cole Douglas and Maya Foreman and three great-grandchildren, Julia Douglas, Vivienne Douglas and Raya Thompson. Services will be under the direction of Parks Brothers Funeral Home, Okemah and officiated by Bro. Keno King and assisted by Dale Smart. Active pallbearers will be Chris Harjo, Jeremy Alberson, Jared Johnson, Clint Guthrie, James Foreman, Michael Johnson, Travis Harjo, Brett Douglas and Michael Hudson. Honorary bearers include Roy Roberts, Glen Jones, Carney Roberts, Reuben Johnson, Tommy Emarthle and Johne Hicks. A wake service will be held Friday, August 30, 2013 from 6:00 – 8:00 PM at the Parks Brothers Funeral Home Chapel in Okemah.
