Carroll Michem Magness

Funeral services for Carroll Michem Magness will be held Tuesday, August 27, 2013 at 10:00 AM at the Okemah High School Panther Dome in Okemah. Interment will follow at the Highland Cemetery in Okemah. Carroll Michem Magness was born February 13, 1961 in Wetumka, Oklahoma to Grimmie Davis Magness and Betty Jean (Bean) Magness. He passed away Friday, August 23, 2013 at his home in Okemah at the age of 52. Mich was a longtime resident of Okemah. He was a 1979 graduate of Okemah High School and later received a bachelor’s degree in Sociology from Baylor University in 1983, a master’s degree in gerontology from the University of Southern California in 2002 and was currently working on a PHD in gerontology from the University of North Texas and a second master’s degree in psychology and counseling at the University of Oklahoma. He gave multiple seminars on aging and mental health around the country and taught classes at Oklahoma State University and Langston. Mich had received teaching degrees in math, biology, physics, chemistry, social studies, geography and geology. On August 22, 1982 he and Mary Ann Finney were married in Waco, Texas. Mich worked with the Oklahoma Department of Human Services Aging Division for 17 years. He worked as an aging specialist and with the annual Oklahoma Conference on Aging, the annual Oklahoma Minority Aging Conference and with the annual Oklahoma Indian Council on Aging. Mich also served on many health boards including: Creoks Mental Health Board, OK State Council on Aging, Oklahoma Long-term Care Facility Board, he was appointed as lead delegate for the White House Conference on Aging and the Systems of Care – Oklahoma Commission on Children and Youth. Mich served on the Okemah School Board for 14 years having been president for nine years and vice president for 5 years. He was also a longtime member of the Okemah First Christian Church. He is preceded in death by his mother, Betty Jean Magness. Survivors include his wife Mary Ann Magness of the home; three sons, Michael Davis Magness of Okemah, Mathew Coale Magness of Okemah and Mark Andrew Magness of Dallas, Texas; his father, Grimmie Magness of Okemah; one brother, David William Magness of Tulsa and four grandchildren, Derek Walter Magness, Brendan Spencer Magness, Daniel Grimmie, Riley Ann Magness. Services will be under the direction of Parks Brothers Funeral Home, Okemah and officiated by Rev. Doug Hauenstein. Active pallbearers will be Dustin Crouch, Michael Magness, Mark Magness, Matthew Magness and David Magness. Dontations and charitable contributions may be made to Oklahoma Medical Research Foundation in conjunction with Stephenson Cancer Center at the OU Medical Center. Viewing and visitation will be Sunday 12:00 – 8:00 PM and Monday 9:00 AM – 8:00 PM with family greeting friends Monday 6 – 8 PM at the funeral home.
